Charmette Young is a self-taught artist born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. Charmette has developed a complex body of work, creating geometric burst of color using embroidery floss. These labor-intensive pieces have gained a national cult following.
Recently she was featured in “A Woman’s Place: How Women Shaped Pittsburgh” at the Heinz History Center, “LOOK EVERYWHERE” at Atelier Art Gallery, which showcased works from 33 artists working from 30 progressive art studios across the United States. Curated by Jennifer Gilbert of Jennifer Lauren Gallery. And a retrospective titled: “It Keeps My Hands Busy” at UAG of the University of Pittsburgh.
In Charmette’s words:
”I like to stay busy and occupy my mind”
“I'm named after my other grandmother. See, I take after myself and nobody didn't teach me. So I just do it on my own. I do things I want to do. I just need myself. That's why I am a good artist. Doing things for my life. It's paycheck to paycheck.”
